Although Kelley has lived in Oklahoma since 1988 he still claims his native state as home. He spent his childhood and teen years playing in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas and began hunting and fishing at a young age with his father leading by example. Kelley has already begun handing down the tradition to his two young sons and returns home as often as possible to re-visit the best fishing creeks and deer woods with his brother, Kevin.
The great outdoors is not Kelley’s only interest. He began riding bulls while in high school, and this demanding sport took him through two years of junior college at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. After transferring to Oklahoma State University, Kelley continued to rodeo as much as possible. It was somewhere in the middle of bull riding, working, and college classes that music entered Kelley’s life.
After moving to Stillwater to continue his college education, Kelley became friends with Bobby and Noe Flores. The Flores brothers desperately needed an additional guitar player for their band, so they bought Kelley a bass guitar against his protests. After several practice sessions it was decided Kelley would not be ready for their first gig if he was to play acoustic guitar. He has been playing bass ever since. Around the same time he had met Scotte and JJ Lester in and around the rodeo arena not knowing until 1992 that he would end up in a band with these brothers.
Kelley continuously works toward becoming a better musician by studying fellow bass guitarists. In addition he would like to become a better singer and learn to play the banjo.
